"Everything run smoothly and was amazing, the team really make sure you have a great experience. Oliver started our day with so much detail and so welcoming then transporting us to the chopper, where Mark our pilot took over and was not only so informative but also has great sense of humour. Highly recommended 100%"

How a 25-Minute Glacier Flight Works
From check-in on Main Road to a landing high above the ice.
Check in on Main Road
Check in at Glacier Country Helicopters' office in Franz Josef 30 minutes before your flight for weighing and the safety briefing.
Fly up the glacier valley
Headsets on, the pilot flies over the old terminal moraine and up the valley above the icefall, with commentary on the way.
Land high in the Alps
Weather permitting, you land on a snowfield (in summer sometimes an alpine site without snow) and step out for photos.
Return to Franz Josef
Fly back down to the township. If cloud closes the route, the flight moves to another slot or you take a refund.
How the Day Works
The Day of a Short Glacier Flight, Step by Step
A short flight takes well over its listed minutes once you count check-in and the transfer, and the decision to fly is made only 30 minutes before take-off. Here is how the day runs, from booking to what happens if the cloud comes in.
- Book the first morning of your stay — Every operator advises booking for your first day in the area and keeping spare days after it. Glacier Helicopters recommends an early flight, so a flight held back by weather still has a chance later the same day.
- Check in and step on the scales — Arrive at the operator's office in the township 30 minutes before departure. Staff weigh every passenger and allocate seats by weight and balance, so you cannot choose your seat. Glacier Country Helicopters says a missed check-in forfeits the full fare.
- The weather call — The final go or no-go comes at check-in. Cloud, wind and rain all count, and the weather up in the Alps can differ from the sky over Franz Josef. After the safety briefing, some operators take you to the hangar by van.
- The flight and the landing — With headsets on, you fly up the valley over the icefall while the pilot gives commentary. The listed minutes include the landing, which lasts from about 6 to 15 minutes depending on the operator. If cloud covers the landing site, the pilot may fly over without landing.
- Back at the base — Most short flights return to the same base. The Helicopter Line suggests allowing about an hour in total for a 35-minute flight, check-in included.
- If the flight is cancelled — On a GetYourGuide booking, a weather cancellation gets you a new time or a full refund through GetYourGuide. Move to your spare day, or take the refund and walk the free valley track to the glacier viewpoint instead.

Decision Guide
Which Franz Josef Helicopter Flight Should You Choose?
Four kinds of flight, the minutes you spend in the air and on the snow, and how to plan around the weather.
The four kinds of Franz Josef helicopter flight
Nearly every flight from Franz Josef belongs to one of four groups. Short scenic flights of 20 to 25 minutes fly up the Franz Josef Glacier and land once on snow high in the Southern Alps. Twin-glacier flights of 30 to 35 minutes add Fox Glacier (or, on one route, the Tasman Glacier) and keep the single landing. Flights of 40 to 60 minutes take in three or four glaciers with views toward Aoraki/Mt Cook, and the four-glacier flight lands twice.
The fourth group is the heli-hike. Here the helicopter is a short transfer, and the point of the trip is a guided walk of a few hours on the ice in crampons.
The most-reviewed flight on this site sits in the first group. Glacier Country Helicopters’ Franz Josef Glacier: Helicopter Flight & Alpine Landing lasts 25 minutes with a 10-minute landing, is rated 4.8 from 696 GetYourGuide reviews and costs from $223 per person (check tour details). The 20-minute flights, including the cheapest flight on this site, are set out on snow landing flights.
Listed minutes, air time and time on the snow
The minutes printed on a listing cover the whole flight, landing included. Glacier Country Helicopters’ 35-minute flight over two glaciers includes a 10-minute snow landing, so you spend about 25 minutes in the air (check tour details). You also check in 30 minutes before departure, and The Helicopter Line suggests allowing about an hour in total for a 35-minute flight.
Time on the snow varies by operator too. Glacier Country Helicopters says its landings last around 10 to 15 minutes including loading, Glacier Helicopters says around 6 to 8 minutes, and The Helicopter Line’s Fox Glacier flight lists about 10 minutes. Two flights with the same listed length can give you a different amount of time outside, so compare the landing figure before the price.
Routes, glaciers and landing types
The short flights stay above the Franz Josef side of the range. Twin-glacier flights cover Franz Josef and Fox on a set route, or Franz Josef plus Fox or Tasman on a route that changes with the weather; twin glacier flights lays the options side by side. Flights that cross the Main Divide to the Tasman Glacier, New Zealand’s longest, are on Mount Cook flights. A clear view of Aoraki/Mt Cook depends on cloud and on the route flown that day.
Operators use three words for the landing. A snow landing puts you on a snowfield high in the mountains. INFLITE calls an alpine landing one on a mountain site that may have no snow in warm months, and a glacier landing one directly on a glacier, with more reliable snow year-round. The listing for the 25-minute Glacier Country flight says that in summer its snow landing may become an alpine landing if no snow is available. Snow landing vs alpine landing shows which flights land where.
No landing is guaranteed. The pilot makes the call on the day, and Glacier Country Helicopters adjusts the price if your flight ends up as an overflight.
When a longer flight makes sense
Pay for more minutes when you want more glaciers or a second landing. The 45-minute three-glacier flight and the 60-minute four-glacier flight with two landings (check tour details) are compared on multi-glacier flights. A longer flight can also help on an unsettled day: the operator’s listing for its 25-minute flight says that flight has its highest rate of cancellation, because it has one route and one landing site while the longer flights have several.
If ten minutes standing on the snow is the goal, a short flight covers it. Walking among crevasses and ice formations takes a guided heli-hike: up to 2.5 hours on the ice with Franz Josef Glacier Guides, or up to 3 hours with Fox Glacier Guiding from Fox Glacier village, each with age, weight and fitness rules. Groups of four to six can hire the whole aircraft, and private flights are priced per helicopter for up to six people.
When you know which of these you want, which Franz Josef helicopter flight to book gives a pick for each kind of traveler, from families with small children to people with one night in town.
Weather and the backup day
Glacier Country Helicopters says flights are rescheduled for weather regularly, and no operator publishes a cancellation rate. The final call comes at check-in, 30 minutes before departure, and the weather in the Alps can differ from the sky over the township. Every operator advises booking for your first day in the area and leaving spare days after it. Franz Josef Glacier Guides suggests at least two.
On GetYourGuide you can cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, and a weather cancellation gets you a new time or a full refund. Weather, cancellations and refunds explains what happens next and how refunds reach you.
Franz Josef or Fox Glacier
Franz Josef and Fox Glacier villages are about 24 km apart, roughly 25 minutes by road, and most flights compared here check in at Franz Josef, including four GetYourGuide listings filed under Fox Glacier. Choose the village by where you are sleeping and which heli-hike you want; Franz Josef vs Fox Glacier lists which flights leave from each.
Rough prices
GetYourGuide shows prices in US dollars per person. Flights of 20 to 25 minutes cost $204 to $223. Twin-glacier flights and the 30-minute Tasman flight run $243 to $280, the 45-minute three-glacier flight $393, and the 60-minute flights $395 to $506. The two heli-hikes with a page here cost $480 and $508.
Operators quote their own prices in New Zealand dollars, so their websites show larger numbers for the same flight. Franz Josef helicopter prices lists every flight with its price per listed minute and the children’s fares.
Seeing the glacier without a helicopter
You can see Franz Josef Glacier for free. The Department of Conservation’s valley walk is an easy 1.7 km return, about 30 minutes, to a viewpoint about 3 km from the terminal face, starting at the car park at the end of the glacier access road. You cannot walk onto the ice from there: the river has cut off access up the valley, and helicopters are now the only way onto the glacier for guided walks.
DOC also says the snowfields of the upper névé can be seen only from a helicopter or ski plane. Seeing the glacier without a helicopter covers the free walks at both glaciers, so you can plan a day on foot around your flight.

Planning a Franz Josef Helicopter Flight: Questions and Answers
Weather, check-in, clothing, children and the other things to know before you book.
For most visitors who want to see the glacier's upper snowfields, yes: DOC says the upper névé can be seen only from a helicopter or ski plane, and the shortest flights with a snow landing start from $204 per person. On a low-cloud day or a tight budget, the free valley walk to a viewpoint about 3 km from the face may suit you better. Is a Franz Josef helicopter flight worth it? weighs both.
On GetYourGuide, prices are in US dollars per person: about $204 to $223 for a 20 to 25 minute flight with a landing, $243 to $280 for 30 to 35 minutes, $393 for 45 minutes and $395 to $506 for 60 minutes. Heli-hikes cost $480 to $508. Operators quote their own prices in New Zealand dollars, so the numbers on their sites look higher. Franz Josef helicopter prices lists every flight.
The listed minutes include the landing. A 35-minute flight with a 10-minute landing gives you about 25 minutes in the air. Landing time depends on the operator: around 10 to 15 minutes including loading at Glacier Country Helicopters, around 6 to 8 minutes at Glacier Helicopters. Add the 30-minute check-in, and allow about an hour for a 35-minute flight. Flight times compared goes through each length.
Operators make the final weather call at check-in, 30 minutes before departure, and no cancellation rate is published. If you booked on GetYourGuide, a weather cancellation gets you a new time or a full refund through GetYourGuide, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours ahead. Book for your first day in the area and keep a spare day after it. Weather, cancellations and refunds has the details.
Check in 30 minutes before your flight at the operator's office (15 minutes for Franz Josef Glacier Guides' heli-hike). Glacier Country Helicopters checks in at 10 Main Road, Franz Josef, and allows 45 minutes for groups over ten. No operator offers hotel pickup, and the Franz Josef bases are a short walk from most accommodation. Glacier Country Helicopters says a missed check-in forfeits the full fare, so leave time to park and walk.
Wear warm layers with a jacket, sturdy closed-toe shoes and sunglasses, because the glare off the snow is strong. Glacier Helicopters says it lends no clothing, and no operator mentions boots for a scenic landing, so dress for the snow yourself. Leave selfie sticks, tablets, drones and loose scarves behind. On a heli-hike the guides supply boots, crampons and waterproofs. What to wear has the operator lists.
Glacier Country Helicopters and Glacier Helicopters set no minimum age; infants under about 15 kg sit on an adult's knee and older children need their own seat. Child fares range from 50% of the adult fare at HeliServices to 70% at Glacier Helicopters. Glacier Country Helicopters requires a Comfort Seat at half fare from 120 kg, and INFLITE lists a 116 kg limit. Flights with kids sets out each operator.
Commercial operators fly under New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority rules, and every flight starts with a safety briefing. Passengers are weighed at check-in so the pilot can plan weight and balance and allocate seats. Pilots make the weather call and can change the route, skip the landing or cancel. The heli-hike operator works under the Adventure Activities regulations. What happens on a flight covers each step.
Most flights compared on this site check in at Franz Josef, including four GetYourGuide listings filed under Fox Glacier. A few depart Fox Glacier village, about 24 km and 25 minutes' drive south: a Glacier Helicopters 25-minute flight, The Helicopter Line's Fox Glacier and Mount Cook flight, and the Fox Glacier Guiding heli-hike. Fly from the village you sleep in. Franz Josef vs Fox Glacier lists which flight leaves where.
Not from the valley. Glacier Country, the regional tourism body, says the river has cut off access up the valley, and helicopters are now the only way onto the glacier for guided walks. Foot access to the ice ended around 2011 to 2012. To walk on the ice, book a guided heli-hike, which spends up to 2.5 hours on the glacier with crampons and a guide. Franz Josef heli-hikes compares the options and the eligibility rules.
Flights that cross the Main Divide reach the Tasman Glacier, on the Aoraki/Mt Cook side of the range. INFLITE's 30-minute flight lands on the Tasman Glacier, and Glacier Country Helicopters' 45-minute and 60-minute flights pass Franz Josef, Fox and Tasman glaciers with views of Mt Cook. From Fox Glacier village, The Helicopter Line flies past Aoraki/Mt Cook after its landing. How much of the peak you see depends on cloud. Mount Cook flights compares them.
Flights run all year, weather permitting. Glacier Helicopters says November to March is the busiest period and suggests booking a month ahead then, two weeks ahead at other times. Rain is heavy in every month: in the 1991 to 2020 record each month had more than 300 mm, and July had the least. Winter days are short, so a late-afternoon flight in June sits close to dusk. Best time of year compares the seasons.
No. Every landing depends on the weather and the pilot's call on the day, and Glacier Country Helicopters adjusts the price if your flight becomes an overflight with no landing. Its 25-minute flight's listing also says that in summer the snow landing may become an alpine landing if no snow is available. The same operator's longer flights have several possible routes and landing sites. Snow landing vs alpine landing explains the terms.
