Franz Josef helicopter weather: cancellations, refunds and rebooking

How the weather call works at Franz Josef, what happens to a GetYourGuide or Viator booking when a flight is cancelled, and how many spare days to keep.

Updated October 2026

If the operator cancels your Franz Josef flight for weather, you get the choice of another time or a full refund, and on a GetYourGuide booking that refund comes from GetYourGuide. The decision is usually made at check-in, 30 minutes before departure, so book your flight for your first day in the area and keep at least one spare day after it.

Cancellations are common enough that every operator gives that advice, though none publishes a cancellation rate. You can also cancel yourself for free up to 24 hours before the flight on every GetYourGuide listing compared here. The rest of this guide covers how the call is made, why a scenic flight can go when a heli-hike cannot, and the refund terms by booking channel.

How the weather call works on the day

Franz Josef sits in the path of the prevailing westerly winds, and DOC says they can bring heavy rain at any time of year to Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Annual rainfall figures differ by source: DOC says up to five meters, Franz Josef Glacier Guides say six to eight meters, and a 1991-2020 record for the village gives about 5,555 mm. Any of them makes this one of the wettest places in New Zealand.

Rain is only part of it. Glacier Country Helicopters says rain, wind and cloud all matter, that reschedules happen “regularly”, and that the township and the Alps “can also have quite different weather”. A clear sky over the village does not mean the landing sites are clear, and a grey morning in town does not always ground the helicopters.

The final call comes late. Glacier Helicopters and HeliServices decide at check-in, 30 minutes before departure, and The Helicopter Line runs its weather check at the same moment. Franz Josef Glacier Guides make their final call just before the trip departs. On the Fox side, Fox Glacier Guiding’s Viator listing says its call is made 10 minutes before check-in.

Turn up on time even on a doubtful day. Glacier Country Helicopters says a missed check-in forfeits the full fare. It asks you to call the day before to confirm, and The Helicopter Line asks for a call at least 24 hours ahead on 0800 807 767. Flights can also be cancelled for too few passengers: Glacier Country Helicopters needs four to depart and Glacier Helicopters three. The listings offer the same choice of another departure or a full refund in that case.

Weather can change the flight without cancelling it. The listings reserve the right to alter the route or drop the landing, and the snow landing vs alpine landing guide explains what happens to the landing when cloud sits on the sites.

Why a scenic flight may run when a heli-hike cannot

A heli-hike needs much more good weather than a short scenic flight. Franz Josef Glacier Guides say they “need a four-hour window of clear weather” for the Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike with Helicopter Transfer. If the helicopter cannot fly, the hike does not run, and there is no walking route onto the glacier to replace it. The guiding company may offer its short glacier-landing flight as an alternative.

A scenic flight needs a window of 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the flight you book. If you only have one morning in Franz Josef, that shorter window gives a scenic flight better odds of going ahead. The heli-hike vs scenic flight guide weighs the two on everything else.

Route options matter too. The GetYourGuide listing for Glacier Country Helicopters’ 25-minute flight says it “has the highest rate of cancellation as it only has one flight route & landing site”, unlike the longer flights, which have several. A flight such as the Pilot’s Choice, which can swap its second glacier, gives the pilot more ways to get you up on a mixed day. Glacier Country Helicopters also sells an 18-Minute Twin Glacier Helicopter Flight with no landing for days when cloud keeps the helicopters below the snow.

On the Fox side, Fox Glacier Guiding says its lower operating altitude means it is less affected by weather than other operators in the area. That is the company’s own claim, and no figures are published to test it.

Reviews show what a bad spell feels like. On the Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers flight, two reviewers were rescheduled three and four times before they had to leave or asked for their money back. A few others wrote that a weather refund took weeks to arrive or that they struggled to reach anyone about it. Keep your booking confirmation and contact the platform you booked through.

Refund rules by where you booked

Who refunds you depends on where you paid. Glacier Country Helicopters says refunds for marketplace bookings are processed through the agent or booking system you used, so a GetYourGuide booking goes back through GetYourGuide. The direct terms below apply only when you book with the operator itself.

Booked throughIf you cancelIf weather cancels the flightNotes

INFLITE, directFull refund at least 48 hours before check-inRefund or free rescheduleFrom its Mount Cook FAQ; unconfirmed for its Franz Josef flights

Two marketplace listings add their own lines. Fox Glacier Guiding’s Fox Glacier heli-hike allows no refunds or changes for guest-requested cancellations within 24 hours, with a full refund for weather. INFLITE’s listings say weather cancellations are 100% refundable, and that if the operator moves your time and you cannot make the new one, you get a full refund.

When the flight is cut short or loses its landing

A flight that goes ahead without its landing is not a cancellation. Glacier Country Helicopters says it can never fully guarantee a landing and that “in the event of an overflight your flight price will be adjusted”. On its direct price list, its 18-minute overflight costs the same as its 25-minute flight, its lowest fare. For a GetYourGuide booking, take any price adjustment up with GetYourGuide.

It can also run the other way. One reviewer of the 25-minute Glacier Country flight paid extra per person to switch to a different route when weather closed the usual one, and another on The Helicopter Line’s 40-minute Mt Cook flight reported a much shorter flight and a partial refund. Ask at check-in what happens to the price if the route changes, before you board.

Heli-hikes have a written rule. Franz Josef Glacier Guides consider a partial refund if weather cuts a trip short with under 1.5 hours on the ice, and give none at 1.5 hours or more. A reviewer of the heli-hike described a trip called off minutes after landing on the glacier.

Planning your days around the weather

Book for your first day in the area. Every operator advises it, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides suggest keeping at least two days for a heli-hike. Glacier Helicopters also recommends an early flight, because a weather-delayed flight then has a better chance of flying later the same day. The best time of day guide covers departure times.

Book ahead in the busy months. Glacier Helicopters says November to March is its busiest period and suggests booking a month ahead then, two weeks ahead otherwise, and it takes no online bookings within 24 hours of departure. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes an early booking low-risk on GetYourGuide.

Plan on two nights if you can. The where to stay page shows the township’s options, and the best time of year guide shows how rainfall and daylight change by month.

For a short flight that keeps your options open, the HeliServices Twin Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers Helicopter Trip departs from Franz Josef and is rated 4.9 from 154 GetYourGuide reviews; our twin glacier flights page compares it with the other two-glacier flights.

Questions about weather and refunds

Do helicopter flights get cancelled at Franz Josef because of weather?

Yes, regularly, in the words of one operator. Rain, wind and cloud can all stop a flight, and the call is usually made at check-in. No operator publishes a cancellation rate.

What happens if my Franz Josef helicopter flight is cancelled for weather?

You are offered another time or a full refund. On GetYourGuide the refund comes from GetYourGuide, and on Viator from Viator. Operators cannot refund marketplace bookings themselves.

What is the Franz Josef heli hike cancellation policy?

On GetYourGuide you can cancel free up to 24 hours before, and a weather cancellation is refunded. Booked direct with Franz Josef Glacier Guides, it is free up to 24 hours before check-in, with a full refund or the next slot if weather cancels.

How many spare days should I allow?

At least one after your booked flight, and two for a heli-hike, which is what Franz Josef Glacier Guides recommend.
