"It’s a short, exciting, thrilling helicopter ride to see astonishing white glaciers on top of one of the highest mountains in New Zealand. The pilot was well-experienced and gently maneuvered the aircraft that made our trip smooth and not ner"

Private Flights
Private Flights, Options and Prices
Four private routes, how per-helicopter pricing works and who gains from it.
A private flight from Franz Josef means you pay for the whole helicopter, for up to six people, and only your group flies. Glacier Country Helicopters sells four private routes on Viator, starting with the 25mins Private Helicopter Flight in Franz Josef with Landing from $866 per helicopter for one to three people. With six aboard on the larger option, each person pays about $222, roughly the price of one shared seat on the same flight.
For a group of four to six, a private flight costs about the same per head as buying seats, or less. For a couple, it costs nearly twice as much.
Quick picks for a private helicopter

How per-helicopter pricing works
All four private products are priced per aircraft, with a maximum of six passengers. Viator quotes the options in New Zealand dollars, and the US dollar figures below are approximate conversions at the listings’ own rate. The “from” price you see first is the cheapest option, usually the one for one to three people.
| Private route | Flight | 1–3 people | 4–6 people | About per head with six (derived) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Franz Josef Glacier, 1 landing | 25 min | NZ$1,495 ($866) | NZ$2,300 (about $1,330) | About $222 |
| Two glaciers, 1 landing | 35 min | NZ$2,050 ($1,187) | Same price | About $198 |
| Three glaciers, 1 landing | 45 min | NZ$2,600 ($1,505) | Same price | About $251 |
| Four glaciers, 2 landings | 60 min | NZ$3,450 ($1,998) | NZ$4,900 (about $2,840) | About $473 |
The per-head column divides the four-to-six price by six, so it is an estimate. Viator shows the exact price for your group size and date.
On your trip, that means a full helicopter of six pays about the same per head as a shared seat on GetYourGuide, and less on the two- and three-glacier routes. The shared fares are $223 per person for the 25-minute flight, $280 for two glaciers, $393 for three and $506 for four. As listed in October 2026, the 35-minute private flight for four to six people (NZ$2,050) also costs less than the 25-minute flight’s up-to-six option (NZ$2,300), so compare both before you book.
A small group pays more. Three people on the 25-minute private flight pay about $289 each, and a couple pays $866 for the helicopter against $446 for two shared seats. Our price guide lists the shared fares for every flight.
Who a private flight suits
A group of four to six gains the most, because the per-head cost lands close to a shared seat. Families and friends who want to fly together also gain: on shared flights, seats are allocated at check-in by weight and balance, and a few reviewers were seated apart from their partner, among strangers. A private flight also suits a special occasion, since nobody else is aboard.
Glacier Country Helicopters says private charters have more flexibility and that seating can be discussed. If a couple or a solo traveler mainly wants to land on the snow, a shared seat on the snow landing flights costs far less.
Rules that still apply on a private flight
Weight and balance come first. Glacier Country Helicopters says every charter must meet the helicopter’s weight and balance rules, and its private listings say the total passenger weight must fit within them. Its seats are 40 cm wide, and passengers of 120 kg or more need a Comfort Seat, which the 35-minute private listing shows as an extra. The front seats carry the tightest limits: 154 kg for two passengers or 120 kg for one.
Its larger helicopter, an Airbus H125, seats up to six passengers, and its MD 520N up to four. The listings ask you to mention limited mobility, an injury or recent surgery when you book, because there are two high ladder-style steps into the helicopter and the answer can change which aircraft you fly in. Infants sit on an adult’s lap.
You may still share check-in and the van to the helicopter with passengers on other flights, and you check in 30 minutes before departure. Allow an extra 45 minutes on top of the flight time.
Weather and cancellations
A private booking does not change the weather call. The final decision comes at check-in, and a landing is never guaranteed. Book your first morning in Franz Josef and keep a spare day. Each private listing offers free cancellation on Viator, and refunds go through Viator. Our weather and cancellations guide explains the rules.
Other private options
INFLITE sells Picnic Amongst the Peaks on GetYourGuide from $2,262 per group of up to six. It is a 1.5-hour private trip from Franz Josef Heliport across the Main Divide to a landing on the Tasman Glacier, where the pilot sets up a picnic on the snow. It has no reviews yet.
The Helicopter Line quotes its charters per flying hour, per aircraft, and Glacier Helicopters asks you to contact it directly for charter prices. Both are direct bookings, outside GetYourGuide and Viator.
Private or shared: choosing
Book a private flight if you are four to six people, want to sit together as a group or are marking an occasion. The 35-minute two-glacier route gives a full helicopter the lowest per-head price of the four. For a longer route, the private four-glacier flight costs about $473 each with six; our three vs four glacier page explains what the extra time buys.
Book shared seats if you are one to three people. If your group wants hours on the ice, compare the heli-hikes, which have their own age and weight rules. Our kids and seating guide has each operator’s child rules. When your group size is settled, check availability for the 25-minute private flight.

How Passengers Rate the Private Flight
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and Viator and may shift slightly day to day.
"Amazing experience, highly recommended. It's so good to land on the snow and take in the views. We had 6 people plus the pilot in our helicopter"
"Fantastic experience, especially for us West Aussies who never experience snow. Loved the snow landing and the smooth flight. Thanks Gus."
"Amazing trip! Fortunate to strike a clear day and score a front seat for what was my first helicopter flight. The view of the glacier and skimming over the mountain tops then the snow landing were all so memorable. Pilot & staff very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend,"
"Amazing! Stunning! Loved every second of this trip, the feeling of flying over the mountains set the good vibes off. Highly recommend, Poppy and staff very welcoming."
"We were supposed to do this bit the weather made it impossible. That was a bit of a disappointment but it was great seeing the glaciers blue ice from above."
"The tour was real great. We could feel the "family"-spirit of the whole team. We got a very good preflight instruction not to take too much "material" with us as the später in the machine is quiet small. All in all: very recommendable!"
"Amazing views on the helicopter ride and awesome experience in the snow. Pilot was great and smooth ride"

Private Helicopter Flight Questions
Prices per helicopter, group sizes, seating, weight rules and weather for private flights from Franz Josef.
Glacier Country Helicopters' private flights on Viator start at $866 per helicopter for the 25-minute flight with a snow landing, for one to three people (NZ$1,495). Up to six people pay NZ$2,300, about US$1,330. The 35-minute two-glacier flight is $1,187, the 45-minute three-glacier flight $1,505 and the 60-minute four-glacier flight from $1,998, all per helicopter.
Per helicopter. All four Glacier Country Helicopters private products are priced per aircraft, with up to six passengers. Two of them have one price for one to three people and a higher one for four to six; the 35-minute and 45-minute flights have a single price for any group up to six. Viator shows the exact price for your group size when you pick a date.
Up to six passengers, as long as the group's total weight fits the helicopter's weight and balance limits. Glacier Country Helicopters' Airbus H125 seats up to six and its MD 520N up to four, and the listings say limited mobility can change which aircraft you fly in. Its seats are 40 cm wide, and passengers of 120 kg or more need a Comfort Seat.
About $222 each on the 25-minute flight, $198 on the 35-minute two-glacier flight, $251 on the 45-minute three-glacier flight and $473 on the 60-minute four-glacier flight. These are estimates from the NZD group prices converted to US dollars. The shared seats on GetYourGuide cost $223, $280, $393 and $506 per person for the matching routes, so a full helicopter costs about the same as a shared seat or less.
For four to six people, often about the same per head or less. For one to three people, no: three on the 25-minute private flight pay about $289 each against $223 for a shared seat, and a couple pays $866 against $446 for two seats. Shared seats are allocated by weight, so you may not sit together. Our price guide lists every shared fare.
There is more room to ask. Glacier Country Helicopters says private charters have more flexibility and seating can be discussed, but every charter must still meet the helicopter's weight and balance rules. The front seats are the most restricted, at 154 kg for two passengers or 120 kg for one. On shared flights, seats are allocated at check-in.
Possibly the start and end. The private listings say you may share check-in and the van to the helicopter with passengers on other flights. The flight itself carries only your group. Check in at the Franz Josef office 30 minutes before departure, and allow an extra 45 minutes on top of the flight time for check-in, the van, loading and the return.
No. A private booking does not change the weather call, which the operator makes at check-in, and the pilot decides whether a landing is safe on the day. Book your first morning in Franz Josef and keep a spare day. Our weather and cancellations guide explains what happens when a flight cannot go.
Book the private flights on Viator, choosing the group-size option that fits. Each of the four private listings offers free cancellation on Viator's terms, and refunds for a booking made there go through Viator, not the operator. If you book a charter directly with an operator, that operator's own cancellation terms apply.
Yes. INFLITE lists Picnic Amongst the Peaks on GetYourGuide from $2,262 per group of up to six. It is a 1.5-hour private trip from Franz Josef Heliport across the Main Divide to a landing on the Tasman Glacier, where the pilot sets up a picnic on the snow. It has no reviews yet, so judge it on what the listing names, and note that GetYourGuide's free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies.
Yes. The 25-minute private flight has an option for one to three people at $866 per helicopter, and the 60-minute four-glacier flight one at $1,998. A couple pays the whole helicopter price, so it costs about twice the two shared seats. If you mainly want the landing, compare the snow landing flights first.
Yes, booked directly. The Helicopter Line quotes charter rates per flying hour, per aircraft, and Glacier Helicopters asks you to contact it for charter prices. Ask each for a quote in writing, and check whether the weight, seating and cancellation rules match the ones above before you pay a deposit.
