Franz Josef: 35-Minute Helicopter Trip over Two Glaciers

About This Experience
Glacier Country Helicopters runs this 35-minute flight from Franz Josef over two glaciers: the Franz Josef first, then either the Fox or the Tasman Glacier. It costs $280 per person on GetYourGuide and holds 4.9 from 535 GetYourGuide reviews. The 35 minutes include a 10-minute stop at an elevated snow site, so you fly for roughly 25 minutes. Check-in adds 30 minutes before departure.
You check in at the operator's office on Main Road and get a safety briefing, then transfer to the hangar to meet your pilot. Headsets carry the commentary. You fly up over the Franz Josef Glacier and in among the Southern Alps, past ice pinnacles, crevasses and some of New Zealand's highest mountains, before heading for the second glacier. Seats are assigned at check-in, so expect to share the cabin with other passengers.
The landing is at an elevated site where you get out and walk around for about 10 minutes of photos. Glacier Country Helicopters says its landings run around 10 to 15 minutes including loading. Which second glacier you see depends on the weather; the operator says routes may vary and its team keeps you updated on the best route, but it does not say how the choice is made.
It suits travelers who want more than one glacier and a longer flight. In low-rated reviews, a few guests saw only one glacier because of weather, and some couples were seated apart in a full six-seat helicopter. Seats are allocated at check-in by weight and balance, so not everyone gets a window. Book for early in your stay in case weather moves your flight.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.9/5 by 535 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
A must do if you are visiting Franz Josef. Right from the time the helicopter takes off to the point you land on the glacier, each and every moment of this is worth the money spent. Our pilot Mark did manage to click and print us a picture right on the glacier.

Amazing experience!!! Definitely worth it. Mark was a great pilot, friendly, witty and offered to take photos for us at the top. Smooth flight with no reason to be nervous. The check in was easy and the guys working there are really friendly. We did 35 mins and it goes so quick. The flight over the mountains is breathtaking and the snow landing is surreal. After the landing, it’s a short 5 min flight back to land.

An amazing opportunity to view such a majestic vista and learn about the environment from our excellent guide, and sadly reflect on the decline of the glacier and make me ponder on what I could do to reverse it. The pilot was excellent and informative. We felt safe and exhilarated throughout the experience. They made sure everyone got a fair chance to sit by the window and get a chance to marvel at the giants.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I see the Fox Glacier or the Tasman Glacier?
It depends on the weather on the day. You always start over the Franz Josef Glacier, then fly to either the Fox or the Tasman. The operator says routes vary with the weather but does not say how the second glacier is chosen.
How long is the snow landing?
The listing gives 10 minutes at an elevated snow site, and Glacier Country Helicopters says its landings run around 10 to 15 minutes including loading. The landing depends on weather and the pilot's call.
Can I sit next to my partner?
Not always. Seats are allocated at check-in by weight and balance, and a few couples in full six-seat helicopters were seated apart. Front seats are a request made 24 hours ahead and confirmed at check-in.
What is the weight rule?
There is no per-person limit, but passengers of 120 kg or more, including gear, must buy a Comfort Seat at half the flight's retail price. Front seats carry a lower limit of 154 kg for two passengers or 120 kg for one.
What if the weather cancels the flight?
GetYourGuide offers a reschedule or a full refund, processed through GetYourGuide. Book for your first day in Franz Josef so a cancelled flight can move to another day.
