Franz Josef Town: 3-Glacier Helicopter Ride with Landing

4.8 (168 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Glacier Country Helicopters' 45-minute flight takes in three glaciers (Franz Josef, Fox and the Tasman) plus Aoraki/Mt Cook, with a 15-minute snow landing for photos. The 45 minutes include that landing, so you are in the air for about half an hour. It starts at the operator's Franz Josef office, where you check in 30 minutes ahead and sit through a safety briefing.

A short transfer takes you to the hangar to meet your pilot. You fly over the old terminal moraine of Franz Josef Glacier, up its valley and across the head of the névé toward Fox Glacier and the Tasman, New Zealand's longest glacier. Aoraki/Mt Cook and the main peaks of the Southern Alps sit along the route, and the pilot talks you through what you are seeing over the headset.

The landing is on an elevated snow site with views across Westland Tai Poutini National Park. At $393 per person the flight costs $113 more than the operator's 35-minute two-glacier trip, so it suits you if the Tasman and Mt Cook are the reason you came. It also gives a longer stop on the snow than the shorter flights in the operator's range.

Several three-star reviews mention seating. The helicopter holds six, two of those seats are in the middle, and a few riders in the back said they could not see what the pilot was describing. Others had the landing called off or the third glacier dropped when wind and cloud came in, and the operator reprices a flight that cannot land.

Got cut short because of weather other than that fantastic time

— , 2026-04

We had an excellent time with amazing views of the glaciers. The longer flight time meant we really got to appreciate the terrain and truly experience the area. The only minor issue was that we did not have microphones on the headsets to ask questions in flight, but Mark, our pilot was very informative and answered questions during the landing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the snow landing on the 3-glacier flight?

The listing gives 15 minutes on the snow. That time is inside the 45 minutes, so you fly for about 30 minutes. The landing depends on the weather and the pilot's decision on the day.

Will I see all three glaciers?

On a clear day the route covers Franz Josef, Fox and the Tasman glaciers plus Aoraki/Mt Cook. Wind or cloud can shorten it, and some reviewers missed the third glacier for that reason.

How much is it and what is the rating?

It is from $393 per person on GetYourGuide (US dollars, checked October 2026), rated 4.8 from 168 reviews. The Comfort Seat surcharge for passengers of 120 kg or more is extra.

Can I choose a window seat?

No operator here guarantees window seats. You can request a front seat 24 hours ahead, and the request is confirmed at check-in.

Can children fly?

Glacier Country Helicopters has no minimum age. Children need a paying adult with them; infants up to 3 years and under 15 kg sit on a parent's knee, and children from 4 have their own seat.
